Conquering Writer’s Block

Sometimes writer’s block lasts only for hours. Other times it can be days, weeks or months. How frustrating the block can be! You have the will to write, but the words defy you. The harder you try—nothing!

I have found when I encounter writer’s block, it is best to accept the block and to take a break from writing. Sometimes this can be difficult to do. Perhaps you have a deadline or your own personal production goals pushing you. But there is no use fighting it. A block means that your creativity bank account is empty. Writing up to this point has emptied your account.

What to do? First of all—quit fighting the block. Before you can write productively, you need to take a break and replenish your creative bank account. Here are some ideas you can use to refill it:

  • Stop writing for a while, relax and do other activities.

  • Read a book—let that writer’s creativity stimulate your creativity.

  • Go to an art museum or gallery, take time to view the work there and let the images sink in (none in your area? Try looking at art books or view artwork online).

  • Watch a movie or TV program—for relaxation and for new ideas.

  • Go for a walk, a run or a hike.

  • Go to the park or walk in nature.

  • Meditate.
