Unlocking Your Creativity

One thing I’ve learned is trying to force yourself to be creative can be the biggest block to creativity. The harder you try, the more your rational mind (versus your creative mind) resists your effort. Like luck, you need to prepare yourself and put yourself into a position where creativity can find you. When that happens, seize the gift from your muse and record it immediately.

Here are some strategies writers use to stimulate their creativity. Try some. Not all of these ideas work for everyone. Find those that work for you.

  • Daydream while lying down or seated in a comfortable chair

  • Meditate

  • Go running or go for a brisk walk

  • Go to an art gallery or museum (None nearby? Try looking at art books or art online)

  • Take a walk in nature - observe the infinite patterns of leaves, branches, grasses, etc.

  • Go to a concert or listen to music on a CD or online - close your eyes and relax into it (I find instrumentals work best for me)

*** If none of these work - stop and try them later. Remember, creativity cannot be forced, it can only be coaxed.

    Good Luck!
